Flu symptoms usually arrive suddenly: a high temperature, body aches, exhaustion, a dry cough, sore throat and headache. Most healthy adults recover within about a week with rest, fluids and over-the-counter fever relief. See a doctor early if you are pregnant, over 65 or have a long-term condition, and call 112 for breathing difficulty.
How to recognise flu
Flu tends to hit hard and fast. Many people can name the hour it started, which is one of the clearest differences from a cold.
Typical flu symptoms include:
- A sudden high temperature
- Aching muscles and body
- Feeling exhausted, sometimes too tired to get out of bed
- A dry cough and sore throat
- Headache
- Loss of appetite, difficulty sleeping, and sometimes diarrhoea, stomach pain or nausea
A cold usually builds slowly, centres on a blocked or runny nose and sneezing, and rarely stops you functioning. COVID-19 can look like either. If you want to know which one you have, our guide to cold, flu or COVID testing options in Istanbul explains what a test can and cannot tell you.
Looking after yourself in a hotel room
For most healthy adults, flu is managed with rest and time. NHS guidance on self-care is simple:
- Rest and sleep as much as you can. Cancel or postpone tiring plans for a few days.
- Keep warm and drink plenty of water to replace what fever and sweating take out.
- Ask a pharmacist about over-the-counter medicine for fever and aches. Tell them about any conditions you have and medicines you take, and follow the packet.
- Eat when you can. Soup, bread, fruit and yoghurt are easy to find through hotel room service or delivery.
Antibiotics do not work against flu, which is caused by a virus. For people at higher risk, a doctor may consider antiviral medicine, which works better when started early, so do not wait days to ask if you are in one of the groups below.
Who should see a doctor early
Flu is more likely to cause complications in some people. If you belong to one of these groups, arrange a medical assessment rather than waiting it out:
- Pregnant travellers
- Adults aged 65 or over
- Young children
- Anyone with asthma or another lung condition, heart disease, diabetes, kidney disease or a weakened immune system
- Anyone whose symptoms are not improving after seven days, or who improves and then gets worse again
A fever and flu visit at your hotel means you do not have to cross the city while feverish. The doctor examines you, listens to your chest, checks your oxygen and hydration, and decides whether medicine, tests or hospital care is appropriate.
Flu in Istanbul: practical points
Flu circulates mainly in the colder months in Türkiye, as it does across the northern hemisphere, but travellers can catch it at any time of year on flights, trains and crowded sites.
- Pharmacies: look for Eczane on the sign. At night and on Sundays an on-duty pharmacy (nöbetçi eczane) stays open; closed pharmacies show the nearest one in their window.
- Your accommodation: ask reception for extra blankets, a kettle, bottled water and room service. In a rental flat, tell your host you are ill so they know to check on you.
- Protect others: cover coughs and sneezes, wash your hands often and stay away from older relatives and babies in your group where you can.
- Flights: flying with a high fever is uncomfortable and may not be appropriate. Ask a doctor if a flight is close.
Recovery: getting back on your feet
Most people feel well enough to return to gentle activity within about a week, but tiredness and a cough can linger for longer. Ease back in: start with short outings, take taxis rather than steep walks, and rest in the afternoon. If you have a cough that is getting worse rather than better, a new fever after you started to improve, or breathlessness when walking, have your chest checked, as these can be signs of a secondary chest infection.
Preventing flu on future trips
The flu vaccine is the most effective protection and is offered every autumn to many groups, including older adults, pregnant women and people with long-term conditions. If you travel in the winter months, ask your own doctor whether you should have it before the trip. On the move, wash your hands often, carry hand gel for trams and ferries, and avoid touching your face in crowded places.
Useful words
- Grip: flu
- Ateş: fever
- Öksürük: cough
- Halsizlik: weakness, tiredness
Protecting your travel companions
Flu spreads easily in shared rooms. Use separate towels and cups, open a window for fresh air when you can, and wash your hands after coughing or blowing your nose. Companions who are older, pregnant or have long-term conditions should speak to a doctor promptly if they develop symptoms.
Red flags: when flu needs urgent care
Most flu stays unpleasant but manageable. Get a same-day medical assessment if you have a high temperature that will not come down, a cough that is getting worse, symptoms that improved and then returned, or if you are in a higher-risk group. The following signs are an emergency:
- Difficulty breathing or shortness of breath at rest
- Chest pain
- Coughing up blood
- Sudden confusion, extreme drowsiness or a seizure
- Blue or grey lips or skin
- A rash that does not fade when you press a glass against it
