A fever means a body temperature of 38°C or higher, and in most adults it is the body fighting a common infection such as flu or a cold. Rest, fluids and over-the-counter fever relief usually help it settle within a few days. A fever lasting three days, or one with confusion, rash or breathing trouble, needs a doctor.

What counts as a fever

A temperature of 38°C or above is a fever in adults. You may also feel hot to the touch, shivery or sweaty, and generally unwell.

The number on the thermometer is only part of the picture. Readings change with the time of day, a recent hot shower, a warm drink or a sunny afternoon of walking, and a forehead or ear reading can differ from one taken under the tongue. A clinician cares as much about how you are behaving as about the figure: whether you can drink, think clearly, breathe comfortably and get up to the bathroom.

If you have no thermometer, a pharmacy (Eczane) sells simple digital ones, and health monitoring devices can be delivered to your accommodation.

Home care that helps

Most fevers in healthy adults settle with simple care. NHS guidance recommends:

  • Rest and postpone tiring plans.
  • Drink plenty of fluids, little and often. A fever raises the amount of water you lose, and Istanbul's summer heat adds to it.
  • Dress lightly and keep the room comfortable rather than piling on blankets.
  • Ask a pharmacist about over-the-counter medicine for fever and aches. Mention any conditions, pregnancy and medicines you already take, and follow the packet.

Write down your readings with the time, what you took and when. If you later speak to a doctor, that short record is more useful than any single number.

Fever is a sign, not the illness

A fever tells you the body is reacting to something; the question is what. In travellers the usual causes are flu and other viruses, a stomach infection, a urine infection, a chest infection or a throat infection. Heat illness after a long day in the sun can also raise your temperature, and it needs a different response; see our guide to sunburn and heat stroke in Istanbul.

That is why other symptoms matter so much. Fever with a burning feeling when you urinate points one way, fever with a cough and chest pain another, fever with diarrhoea a third. Note them down; they shape what a doctor looks for.

Who should not wait

Ordinary advice to rest and watch does not fit everyone. Arrange a medical assessment sooner if:

  • You are pregnant
  • You are over 65, or the patient is a baby or young child
  • You have a weakened immune system, for example from chemotherapy, steroids or a missing spleen
  • You have diabetes, heart, lung or kidney disease
  • You had surgery or a procedure recently, including cosmetic surgery in Istanbul
  • Your fever has lasted three days or more, or keeps coming back

For these travellers, a fever and flu visit at your hotel avoids a trip across the city while unwell. The visit takes place where you are staying, and the doctor decides after examining you whether tests, medicine or hospital care is right.

Fever after travel to other regions

If you have travelled through other countries before Istanbul, mention it. A fever after time in parts of Africa, Asia, South America or other areas where malaria and other tropical infections occur needs prompt medical assessment, even if you took preventive tablets and even weeks after you left. Tell the doctor exactly where you have been and when, including stopovers and rural trips.

Looking after yourself in a hotel room

Being ill away from home is lonely and tiring, and small practical steps help:

  • Ask reception for extra water, a kettle or room service so you do not have to go out.
  • Keep the room cool, but avoid sitting in a cold draught from the air conditioning.
  • Tell a travel companion, a friend or the hotel that you are unwell, and agree when they will check on you.
  • Keep your phone charged and within reach of the bed.
  • Eat light food when you feel like it: soup, yoghurt, toast or rice are easy to order.

Fever and flying

Airlines can refuse to carry passengers who appear unwell, and flying with a fever is uncomfortable and can spread infection to others. If you have a fever in the days before your flight home, get a medical assessment early so there is time to recover or change plans. A doctor can tell you whether it is reasonable to fly and provide a written report for your airline or insurer if you need to rebook.

  • Ateş: fever
  • Ateşim var: I have a fever
  • Termometre: thermometer
  • Titreme: shivering

Taking a reliable temperature

Readings vary with the method and the moment, so a few habits make the numbers more useful. Wait at least 20 to 30 minutes after a hot drink, a shower or a walk in the sun before measuring. Use the same thermometer and the same method each time, and follow its instructions; forehead and ear readings can differ slightly from those taken under the tongue. Measure at roughly the same times each day, and note whether you had taken fever medicine in the previous few hours, as it lowers the reading for a while without treating the cause.

When a fever needs a doctor or 112

Get a same-day medical assessment for a fever with:

  • A temperature that stays high despite fever medicine
  • Shivering or shaking that will not stop
  • Pain or burning when urinating, or pain in your side or back
  • A cough with chest pain or green or bloody phlegm
  • Vomiting that stops you keeping fluids down
  • A new rash of any kind

Frequently Asked Questions

What temperature is a fever in adults?
A temperature of 38°C or higher. How you feel and behave matters as much as the exact number.
How long can a fever last before I see a doctor?
If a fever lasts three days or more, keeps coming back, or you are in a higher-risk group, see a doctor rather than waiting.
Should I go to hospital for a fever in Istanbul?
Go to an emergency department or call 112 for a fever with a stiff neck, a rash that does not fade under a glass, confusion or difficulty breathing. Most other fevers can be assessed by a doctor at your accommodation.
Can a doctor visit my hotel at night for a fever?
Yes. Requests are accepted around the clock, and the visit takes place at your hotel, Airbnb or residence.

If you are running a temperature and would rather have a doctor check you tonight, send a WhatsApp message with your symptoms and where you are staying.
