Most people arrive at this subject with one large question — will this trip actually work? — and that question cannot be answered directly, because it is really five smaller ones wearing a single coat.

This page separates them. Each group below gives short answers, and points to the guide in this series that covers the detail. If you already know which group you are in, skip to it.

Start Here: Which Question Are You Actually Asking?

Five different problems get searched with the same words, and they have different answers and different people solving them.

Accessibility is about the built environment: ground, steps, lifts, entrances. Transport is about vehicles and boarding points. Equipment is about a chair, a frame or a walking aid and whether it fits the task. Companionship is about a person — non-clinical help with the practical parts of a day. And clinical care is about a nurse or a doctor, which is a different category with different rules.

Getting Into the City

Is airport assistance automatic if I need a wheelchair? No. It is requested through the airline, usually well before departure, and it is worth reconfirming closer to the date. A request that was never acknowledged is not a request.

Will my wheelchair come back at the aircraft door? Not always — a hold-checked chair is often returned at baggage reclaim. Ask your airline specifically, since practice varies by airline and airport.

Can I just take a taxi from the airport? Only if you can transfer into a car seat and your chair folds. A passenger travelling seated in their own chair needs a ramp or lift vehicle booked in advance.

Which airport should I plan around? The one printed on your ticket. Istanbul's two main airports sit on opposite sides of the city, and transfer routes and times differ significantly between them. The full arrival chain is covered in K004 — Accessible Airport Transfer in Istanbul.

Moving Around Istanbul

Is Istanbul wheelchair accessible? Partly, and unevenly. Newer areas and transport interchanges are often manageable; the historic quarters have cobbles, slopes and old buildings. It works well with a planned route and badly with an improvised one.

What is harder, the hills or the cobbles? Usually the hills, because gradient affects a whole route while cobble mainly costs time and comfort on specific stretches.

Is public transport accessible? It varies by line, station and ferry pier rather than being uniformly good or bad. Verify the exact stations on your route rather than generalising from the network.

How much should I plan into a day? Considerably less than a walking itinerary. One anchor per half-day, grouped by district, with the return leg planned before you set out. Route detail is in K001 — Accessible Travel in Istanbul for Wheelchair Users, and pacing for people who walk short distances is in K005 — Traveling to Istanbul With Limited Mobility.

Where You Stay

Does "accessible room" mean anything specific? No, it is not a single standard. Ask for measurements — door widths, lift dimensions, bed height — and ask about the actual room held for your booking rather than the hotel in general.

What is the most important single question? The bathroom: roll-in or level-access shower, a shower with a lip, or a bath only.

Will hotel staff help with washing, dressing or transfers? No. Personal care sits outside a hotel's role and training and needs a companion or a nurse arranged separately.

What do people forget to ask? Fire evacuation for a guest who cannot use the stairs, since lifts are normally taken out of service. The full pre-booking list is in K006 — Hotel Assistance for Elderly and Disabled Travelers.

Equipment and People

Should I rent a wheelchair or bring my own? Bringing your own gives a better fit; renting avoids transit damage and lets you choose equipment suited to rough ground. Many travellers do both.

What decides whether a rental chair is right? Seat width, weight capacity, self-propel versus transit, front castor size, folded dimensions and the cushion. Details are in K003 — Wheelchair Rental in Istanbul for Tourists.

What is the difference between a companion and a nurse? A companion gives presence and practical non-clinical help. A nurse performs regulated clinical procedures. If a task needs a clinical qualification, it is nursing regardless of what the booking is called.

How do I make sure a companion booking matches what I expect? Write a short scope of work first — hours, tasks in plain verbs, language, locations, handover — and quote against that. See K008 — How to Arrange a Companion for an Elderly Tourist in Istanbul, and K007 — Traveling to Istanbul With a Disabled Family Member for families doing the caring themselves.

Health, and When to Stop Planning

What changes for an older traveller on a trip? Timing, fluid balance, physical load and sleep all shift at once, which is why routines slip. K002 — Medical Assistance for Elderly Tourists in Istanbul covers this and the signs worth acting on.

Can a doctor come to my hotel? For non-emergency situations, an in-person assessment can be arranged at a hotel, Airbnb or residence. CNR Medicare coordinates care around the clock with an English-speaking medical team, and in central Istanbul an in-person visit is typically arranged within about thirty to sixty minutes, depending on traffic and availability.

What can an accommodation visit not do? It cannot replace a hospital. Imaging, continuous monitoring, laboratory-dependent decisions and emergency capability belong to a facility, and a responsible clinician will redirect rather than improvise.

When should I stop making arrangements and call for help? Immediately, for chest pain, difficulty breathing, signs of stroke, loss of consciousness, a severe allergic reaction or heavy bleeding. Call 112 in Türkiye or go straight to a hospital emergency department.

I am coming for treatment and also have a mobility limitation. That is two schedules at once, and the interference between them is covered in K009 — Medical Travel Planning for Visitors With Mobility Limitations.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Istanbul realistic for a traveller with mobility needs?
Yes, with planning. The city is uneven rather than uniformly difficult, and the outcome depends heavily on route, accommodation and pace decisions made before arrival.
What is the first thing to sort out?
Which of the five categories your need falls into - access, transport, equipment, companionship or clinical care - because each is solved by different people.
Can most of this be arranged in advance from abroad?
Transfers, equipment and accompaniment normally are. Clinical care is arranged when it is needed, since suitability depends on assessment at the time.
Does a companion replace medical care?
No. A companion's role when something goes wrong is to raise the alarm, not to assess or treat.
What should I always have in writing?
Accessibility details for the room, transfer bookings with times and vehicle type, the airline's assistance record, and insurance cover for equipment and treatment.
What is the emergency number in Türkiye?
112. Use it for anything potentially life-threatening rather than waiting for a private service or a hotel visit.
